Artificial grass calculator
Artificial grass is sold in 2 m and 4 m widths cut to length, so you usually buy more than your lawn area. Picking the right widths keeps waste and joins down.

For a 6 × 5 m lawn, run 1 × 4 m wide and 1 × 2 m wide pieces along the 5 m side, cut to 5.1 m each.
Each piece includes 10 cm extra for trimming. Lay every piece with the pile facing the same way, or the colour will look different.

How we calculate this
We try every mix of 4 m and 2 m wide pieces in both directions across your lawn, and pick the one that needs the least grass. If two options use the same amount, we pick the one with fewer joins.
Each piece is cut 10 cm longer than the lawn so you can trim it neatly to the edge. Joining tape runs along every join.
Questions people ask
What widths does artificial grass come in?
In the UK it usually comes in 2 m and 4 m widths, cut to whatever length you order. Some suppliers also sell 5 m widths.
Why do I need to buy more than my lawn area?
Because you buy whole widths. A 5 m wide lawn needs 6 m of width (a 4 m and a 2 m piece), so some is trimmed off. Choosing which way to lay it can make a big difference.
How do I hide the joins?
Lay all pieces with the pile leaning the same way, butt the edges closely, and fix them to joining tape with adhesive. Fewer joins look better, which is why we keep them to a minimum.
What goes under artificial grass?
Usually a compacted sub-base and a levelling layer of sharp sand or fine grit, with a weed membrane. Check your supplier’s guide for the depths they recommend.
