How we calculate this
A standard UK brick is 215 mm long and 65 mm high. With a 10 mm joint, each brick takes up 225 × 75 mm of wall, so a square metre holds about 59.3 bricks.
We multiply that by your wall area and the number of skins, then add extra for breakages and cuts.
Questions people ask
How many bricks in a square metre?
About 59 for a single-skin wall with 10 mm joints, which is why builders often say 60. A double-skin wall takes about 119.
What size is a standard UK brick?
215 mm long, 102.5 mm wide and 65 mm high. Some reclaimed and imperial bricks are slightly bigger, so measure one if you are matching old brickwork.
How many extra bricks should I buy?
Add 5 to 10% for breakages and cuts. Bricks can vary in colour between batches, so buy enough to finish the job in one order.
Does a garden wall need a foundation?
Yes. Brick walls need a solid concrete footing, and taller or longer walls need piers for strength. For walls near a boundary or over about a metre high, check guidance or ask a builder.
