Laminate flooring calculator
Add about 10% to your floor area for cuts, then divide by the area in one pack. Diagonal and patterned layouts need more.

4 × 3.5 m room, plus 10% for cuts, in packs of 2 m².
Packs are rounded up. Keep a pack spare for repairs, and buy from the same batch so the colour matches.
Laminate for common room sizes
Straight layout, 2 m² packs, 10% extra.
| Room | Size | Packs | Underlay rolls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hallway | 4 × 1.2 m | 3 | 1 |
| Small bedroom | 3 × 3 m | 5 | 1 |
| Double bedroom | 4 × 3.5 m | 8 | 2 |
| Living room | 5 × 4 m | 11 | 2 |
| Open-plan room | 7 × 5 m | 20 | 4 |
How we calculate this
We multiply the length and width of the room, add extra for cuts, and divide by the area in one pack, rounding up. Underlay covers the floor area itself, with no extra.
Scotia or beading runs round the edge of the room to cover the expansion gap. We measure the room’s perimeter, take off 0.8 m for each doorway, and divide by 2.4 m lengths.
Questions people ask
How much extra laminate should I buy?
Around 10% for a straightforward room. Diagonal layouts, patterns and awkward room shapes need more, so we use 15% for those.
Do I need an expansion gap?
Yes. Laminate needs a small gap around the edges so it can expand. The size depends on the product, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and cover the gap with skirting or beading.
Do I need underlay?
Usually, unless the flooring has underlay already attached. On concrete floors you may also need a damp-proof membrane, or an underlay with one built in.
