EV charging time calculator

A 7 kW home wallbox adds roughly 6 kWh of charge an hour, so a 60 kWh battery takes about 9 hrs 26 mins from empty.

Estimates. Cold batteries, a busy charger or a car that limits its own speed can make charging slower.

How we calculate this

We divide the charge you need by the charging speed, which is the lower of the charger’s power and your car’s maximum. We add 10% for energy lost as heat while charging.

On rapid chargers, cars charge fastest between about 10% and 80%, then slow right down. We count anything above 80% at half speed. Home and 3-pin charging stays steady almost to full.

Charge needed (kWh) = battery × (to − from) ÷ 100Time = charge needed ÷ charging speed × 1.1On rapid chargers, charge above 80% counts at half speed

Questions people ask

How long does it take to charge an electric car at home?

On a 7 kW wallbox, a typical 60 kWh battery takes around 8 to 10 hours from empty, so an overnight charge usually fills it. Topping up from 20% to 80% takes about 5 hours.

Can I charge from a normal plug?

Yes, but it is slow: a 3-pin plug gives about 2.3 kW, adding roughly 6 to 8 miles of range an hour. It suits occasional use or small batteries.

Why does charging slow down after 80%?

Cars reduce the charging speed as the battery fills, to protect it. On a rapid charger, going from 80% to 100% can take almost as long as 10% to 80%.
